Adam Carolla has been known to be loud, obnoxious, blunt, and sometimes downright mean. Such is Adam Carolla, right? Not in his new film, The Hammer. Largely based on his experiences as an actual construction worker, The Hammer is the story of a man who used to be something. He was a phenom boxer in his early years. Nowadays, he spends his days distinguishing between screws with his friend, Oswaldo. After being fired and practically impaled with a pickaxe, he decides to return to his old passion.
This movie was surprisingly good. Adam Carolla does a respectable job as basically a toned-down version of himself. The story is slightly predictable at times, but this is the type of movie where that doesn't matter. So it's a decent movie, decent story, decent acting; what makes it special?
For one thing, as far as i can tell, Carolla does the boxing himself. It's especially impressive at his age, and Carolla actually did used to be a boxing instructor, as he plays in The Hammer. Seeing Adam Carolla go at a bag like that is definitely entertaining.
The main reason that I enjoyed this movie, besides Carolla's trademark observational witticisms and..."charm," the film is full of heart, and really feels genuine. Carolla's strange attraction to his lawyer/boxing student feels sincere, and it's interesting to watch how much passion a construction worker can muster up. There's nothing really unique about this movie, but i had a good time watching it.
