Third Rock From the Sun

John Lithgow may be the most emotive person on the planet Earth, and God bless him for it. Dick Solomon and his alien crew, consisting of Sally (the weapons expert), Tommy (the oldest), and Harry (the communicator), have been sent to study Earth people and traditions by the Big Giant Head. Problem is, they know nothing about Earth. Most of the comedy in the show is derived from this fact, putting the aliens in completely unfamiliar situations, and showing how badly they mess them up. That, and John Lithgow's ability to make anything funny with one expression. Another thing that made this show great was the fact that often the show was getting at some deeper insight that would help explain the Earth to the alien crew. Though they weren't always the most original insights, the unique way they were gotten to made it all worth it. Many good, recurring characters, many good, recurring gags, many laughs.

Mr. Show

"Hey everybody, it's Bob and David!" Upon hearing these words, no matter what strangely dressed mascot uttered them, you knew something good was coming. They were the introductory words to each episode of the great Mr. Show, an abandoned empire of hilarity, intelligence, and satire. Starring Bob Odenkirk and David Cross, as well as then-up-and-comers Brian Posehn, Jay Johnston, Tom Kerry, Sarah Silverman, and Jack Black (to name a few), the show contained some truly magical sketch-comedy moments. The show was even more unique due to the strange segues from scene to scene. Mocking subjects like religion, consumerism, and capitalism with ease, the show had a loud voice that has only increased since the release of the DVDs. Mix all that together and you have one show that should not have been canceled.

Twin Peaks

Twin Peaks has always been a confusing show to me. The reason for this is the fact that it's basically a Soap Opera, but at the same time it's so bad ass. Created by Mark Frost and David Lynch, the show was about a girl named Laura Palmer, popular, prom-queen material, who turned up dead, floating in a river. Much of the show is dedicated to figuring out who murdered Laura, but just as much is dedicated to the relationships and goings-on in the small but eccentric town of Twin Peaks as well. Carrying David Lynch's tradition of creepy, strange productions, Twin Peaks became known for having twists and the end of most episodes, cliffhangers that add to the mystery and suspense. The show is very supernatural, while managing to maintain that small-town, at home kinda feel. It was one of the first shows that people were excited to talk about the next day. Television would not be the same if it were not for Twin Peaks.
